Set in beautiful wooded country south-west of Hitchin, Kings Walden is a scattered parish with the Kings Walden Park estate at its centre. The house, originally built in the 1880s, was replaced in 1972 by the present mansion in a mock-Georgian style. The village church is mostly of the 15th and 19th centuries with the reredos, organ case, communion rail and altar tomb all designed by Nesfield, who restored the building in 1868. There is no old glass, but the south window is superb stained glass by William Morris, clear and fresh and showing three archangels. The Baptist Chapel at Breachwood Green contains a link with John Bunyan, who preached from its pulpit in 1678. |

A couple of weeks ago this questionnaire was delivered to every household in the parish. Could we please remind you, even if you think that there is nothing relevant in it for you personally, to complete as much as possible and return to either the school or the Red Lion pub in Breachwood or the shop or the Plough pub in Ley Green.
In order to achieve funding of hopefully £50,000 we need to demonstrate to Sport England (a division of the Big Lottery Fund) that we have conducted an exhaustive survey of what people need/want in our parish. The idea is to renovate the badly dilapidated tennis courts in Breachwood Green recreation ground into a Multi-Use Games Area, incorporating 7-a side football, basket/netball, tennis and some people have already suggested badminton and with the provision of floodlights for longer use. Also on the remaining hard standing it's been suggested that Outdoor Gym equipment is fitted - suitable for all age groups!
We need your thoughts/opinions and if you have any ideas of what other sports this MUGA could be used for please indicate this on the questionnaire and also if you would be willing to run/help run any of the sports mentioned on a regular basis. We will also need to demonstrate that their is a regular income, possibly from club subs, to fund sustained maintenance of this facility.
PLEASE FILL IN AND RETURN AS ABOVE A.S.A.P |

Herts Young Farmers is a charity for 16-26 year olds who are interested in meeting new people and getting outdoors.
They also raise a lot of money, through their various activities, for other local charities such as Herts Air Ambulance.Herts young farmers is run by young people for young people. If there is something that everyone who has ever been a Young Farmer will tell you - its how much YFC has done for them. Whether its new experiences, skills, confidence or friends - everyone who enjoys the outdoors has something to gain. We are always looking for keen outdoorsy types to become new members so if you fancy a go at scuba diving, you're interested in behind the scenes tours of places not normally open to the public, enjoy BBQs and parties, want a go driving a tractor (or to show off the skills you already have) we'd love you to come along to one of our meetings. YFC also gives you the opportunity to travel abroad, get reduced price training and of course get involved as much as possible. All our clubs are run by our members, meaning every week you get to do the things you want to do.
They are currently looking for new members. If you are interested check out their website:

Buy Fuel Early
The cost of energy is soaring and this winter the cost of household fuel is likely to be higher than ever. You are recommended to order heating oil supplies early, before the steep hikes in price that typically take effect between November and April (and peak in the coldest months between December and February).Ordering early will also mean that suppliers have better capacity to deliver promptly before they hit the busiest season and it will help ensure that you do not run out of fuel during a cold snap.
Oil buying groups can reduce the price of your fuel by allowing you to tap into lower prices made possible by bulk ordering. Sharing deliveries in a locality can also reduce the number of trips the tankers need to make, which is better for the environment and safer for the community. A Good Practice Guide for Oil Buying Groups has been drafted by ACRE. An electronic version is available on request from CDA or from the ACRE website:
Good Practice Guide For Oil Buying Groups
Do let us know if you are interested in setting up an oil buying group. If there is enough interest we can consider creating our own group or linking forces with one of the bigger groups. Also let us know if you run an oil buying group in your community and you would be happy to tell other people about it and how to set up their own. Thanks!
Help with installing renewable heat systems
The Renewable Heat Premium Payment (RHPP) scheme is still open with £15m set aside to help with the installation of renewable heat systems for households not heated by mains gas.
Households can apply for a Government grant of up to £1,250 to help towards the cost of installing renewable heat systems such as biomass boilers, ground and air source heat pumps and solar thermal hot water systems. Homes can apply for grants for air source and ground source heat pumps, biomass boilers and solar thermal hot water systems.
There are minimum energy efficiency criteria which must be met before homes qualify for grants and households must agree to monitor the performance of their heating system.
The scheme is scheduled to end in March 2012, but is cash limited, so once the £15m has been allocated, no further funding will be available.
The scheme is run by the Energy Saving Trust and more information can be found on their website: http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/
